FAFSA Process
For U.S. Students Studying Abroad

The FAFSA may be filed online. If filed online, you may download a two-page SAR within 24 to 48 hours of submitting the FAFSA. If you will be attending a foreign school, wait 24 to 48 hours after submitting your FAFSA online, and then call the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-4-FED-AID and ask to have the eight-page hardcopy of the full SAR mailed to you.

If asked to explain this request, let them know that you are attending a foreign school, and that you will send the eight-page detailed SAR to the school once the Federal Student Aid Information Center mails it to you. When your FAFSA information is complete, an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) will be printed in the upper, right-hand corner. Your EFC will be based on the financial information you provide on the FAFSA, and University of St Andrews will use it to award your financial aid.

Once the eight-page SAR is received, you should send it directly to your school's financial aid office for loan certification.

Financial Aid & St Andrews Refund Policy
St Andrews has an established refund policy for international students attending this institution. The following information is for students utilizing U.S. Federal student aid funds: If a student receiving financial aid withdraws from St Andrews and is due a refund of fees paid for that period of enrollment, St Andrews will determine whether a portion of the refund money must be returned to the U.S. Federal aid program. If refund money must be returned, the distribution of refund money will be as follows:

1. Federal Unsubsidized Stafford
2. Federal Subsidized Stafford
3. Federal PLUS

Pro-rated refund calculations apply for any U. S. Stafford borrowing student who is attending St Andrews and withdraws before completing 60% of the applicable loan period. If you withdraw from St Andrews and have received U.S. Federal financial aid during this period, you may also be required to pay back money to the U.S. Federal government.

Free Money For Education

Free money for college is available from a variety of sources and offered as scholarships and grants. Both are an attractive way to pay because you do not need to repay the money. They are available from a variety of sources, including federal and state governments and private sources, such as employers, professional associations, and educational institutions. Some grants and scholarships are based on financial need, others are awarded based on achievement, religious affiliation, ethnicity, memberships, hobbies, or special interests. Sallie Mae offers a free scholarship search of 2.4 million scholarships worth over 15 billion dollars.
