New Borrowers

Before you can apply for a loan, you will need to register an id/password. You will need the following information to do so:

SSN
Date of Birth
Telephone Number
Zip Code
Email Address (optional)

Returning Borrowers

If you have applied online in the past for a Sallie Mae loan, you already have a user id and password. If you have forgotten your id and/or password, select the 'Forgot User ID' or 'Forgot Password' link on the login page.

Here are the basic steps to follow for your loan application. The entire process should take approximately 10-15 minutes.

Note: If you have previously signed a Master Promissory Note and are eligible to re-use the same promissory note for this loan, it is possible that you may skip several steps in the process.


  • Select Start A Loan on the Main Menu.
  • Select I Am A Student, and Start A Federal Stafford Loan
  • Complete the application, including 2 adult references.
  • Electronically sign the Master Promissory Note (MPN).
  • Print the Final Instructions page for your records.
