Federal Stafford Loans for Undergraduate Students

Stafford loans are fixed-rate loans available to undergraduate students who are attending school at least half-time. There are two types of Stafford loans: subsidized and unsubsidized. There are 3 steps to apply for a Stafford Loan at GW. Make sure you follow these steps or there could be delays in receiving your funds.

Step 1 — Selecting your lender and completing the Stafford Loan Data Form

If you did not receive the Loan Data Form in the mail, please contact our office at 202-994-6620.

  2. Complete the Lender Information Sheet.
  3. Write in the lender name and lender code of your chosen lender, and sign the MPN.
  4. Mail the following to our office:

    • The original signed MPN
    • Lender Information Sheet

Please remember that by choosing a lender not participating with GW in disbursing via EFT, your loan will be disbursed by paper check, requiring endorsement by the borrower each semester.

Step 2 — Complete your Master Promissory Note online

PLEASE NOTE: If you are choosing a lender other than those listed above you cannot electronically sign the MPN online. You must print out the MPN and physically sign and mail to our office with the appropriate accompanying documents.

Subsidized Stafford Loan
This loan is available to students who can demonstrate financial need as determined by a federal formula. “Subsidized” means the government pays the interest on this loan while the student is in school and during authorized deferment and grace periods.

Unsubsidized Stafford Loan
This loan is available regardless of need. “Unsubsidized” means that the student is responsible for interest as soon as the loan is fully disbursed. Interest may be paid as it accrues or deferred until after graduation.
